What causes obesity in Cypress preschoolers?

Posted on 08-25-2014

It is no secret that we, as a nation, have an obesity epidemic. We have one of the highest obesity rates in the world and this has been well documented. All age levels are affected from preschool children to the elderly. Here are some factors that can cause obesity in your preschooler:

A poor diet

A poor diet is one of the leading causes of childhood obesity. This can be attributed to high calorie diets consisting of sugary soda, processed foods, candy bars and fast food. Snacking has become a major cause of concern over the last few years with studies showing that children are snacking more than ever. Since the late 1970’s, children have increased their calorie intake from snacks from around 170 calories per day to well over 550 calories per day.

Little to no physical activity or exercise

The advent of television, computers, and videogames has led to increasingly physically inactive children. This lack of physical activity coupled with poor diet has meant that children are consuming more calories but not using them by engaging in physical activity. By simply encouraging your preschooler to play outside or take up a sport, you can drastically reduce the chances of your child becoming obese.

A complex relationship with weight

Obesity has become so commonplace today that it has become widely accepted as the norm. Most overweight adults continue to believe that they are of normal weight, so it is no wonder that their children are also likely to be overweight. This has led to many eating disorders and a complex relationship with food and weight.
